Did you know that…

Water treatments are done nowadays for rivers to revitalize the beauty it has. The study used the Pili nut shells as biochar in making mud balls to improve the quality of water in Naga River. Mud balls have been applied in several countries worldwide to help the rivers, streams and lakes to sustain its resources [5]. These mud balls consist of Effective microorganisms that are made up of beneficial and highly efficient organisms. Through making of mud balls, these microorganisms inhibit the growth of algae, break down any sludge and silt in the water and reduces odor thus, improving sanitation levels [6].

 Biochar

     Did you know that…

Agricultural wastes or residue can be lessen and reproduced now as charcoal? It is known as “Biochars.” Biochars are produced through thermal decomposition usually through pyrolysis. Pyrolysis is essential in charring of biomass into charcoal with an absence of oxygen. The biomass is heated under limited supply of oxygen and at relatively low temperature [7].  The charred biomass is rich in carbon materials that can be used as adsorbent materials and it is similar to activated carbons. In addition, biochars have the potential to increase soil water‐holding capacity [8].

Pili Nut Shells

     Did you know that…

Pili is a tropical tree that is abundant in Bicol Region. Pili are used in many different ways. In this study, the researchers used the pili nut shells as their main component in producing biochar. Studies were conducted to utilize the Pili nut shells into activated carbon (AC). Studies about the pili nut shells were conducted and found out that it possess high fixed carbon content which upon activation, showed higher surface area[9]. Also, it showed that pili nut shells as biochar comprises high adsorption capacity compared to commercial activated carbons. Pili nut shells is a more ideal biomass fuel because of its higher density that serves high quality fuel. The granular shape of the Pili nut shells possess higher surface area that allows better contact of heat production of combustible gases and mixture with oxygen while the gasification process occurs [10].
